Christ bows His head under the thorns, and no blow has landed yet. One man grips His hair and a bundle of switches; another crouches at the floor. The Capodimonte describes Christ and His tormentors frozen as if in a photographic snapshot, preparing the torment with sober, essential gestures, coming forward out of near-total darkness in which the column He is tied to is only glimpsed. A strong light searches out their natural details; what it stresses above all, the museum says, is the human side of the drama. Caravaggio painted it in 1607 for San Domenico Maggiore in Naples. The dark waits for the first stroke.
