The line starts far up the mountain. Riders, camels and walkers follow the path through an arch in a ruined wall, past men in loincloths standing on the stones, to kneel at a shed with a peacock on its roof.
Florence staged its own version every January 6. The National Gallery's curators trace an Epiphany festival there to at least 1390; by 1417 the Compagnia de' Magi ran it on Medici money.
Two friars painted it, and the gallery tells their hands apart: the delicate face of the Virgin is Angelico's; the sturdier Joseph and kings are Lippi's.
