Two panels meet here. In the upper one, God the Father floats among fourteen gold-winged youths and a cloud of blue cherub heads. In the lower, the Child lies on his mother's cloak with two fingers raised, and a canteen hangs from a branch beyond Joseph.
The Metropolitan Museum reads the halves as two debts: the upper to Donatello's sculptural reliefs, the lower to Girolamo da Cremona, who was illuminating choirbooks in Siena. The two were separated in the nineteenth century and rejoined only in 1988.
Together again, the sculptor's heaven hangs directly over the illuminator's earth.
