The Child lies in the manger and the light comes off Him: onto the Virgin's face, the small angels, the ox. The National Gallery counts three lights, the Child, the angel in the sky and the shepherds' fire on the hill, and links it to Saint Bridget of Sweden's vision, in which Our Lady gave birth to her Son, from whom radiated such an ineffable light that the sun was not comparable to it. Lorne Campbell traces Geertgen tot Sint Jans's design, reversed, to a lost Nativity by Hugo van der Goes. The Virgin's blue has darkened almost to black. One small Child keeps the stable lit.
