Three feet tall and one foot wide, the canvas has room for one standing man and one thing to consider. Zurbarán gives Francis a skull and takes away most of his face. The Saint Louis Art Museum's label points to the downcast gaze and the shadowed features, which remove the saint from the viewer's realm, and to a body reduced to simple geometric solids under stark light.
The museum's label recalls the friar famous for receiving the wounds of Christ in a vision. Here the shadow over his face keeps his eyes for the skull alone.
