About this painting

It takes a small army to burn one deacon. The MSK's own iconographic index for this canvas names what surrounds Laurence as he lies on the gridiron over open fire: an executioner, a fork, a chain, soldiers, a lance, a horseman, a standard-bearer, an eagle.

The same index names him as the martyr and deacon Laurence of Rome, and files his death by burning on the gridiron under violent death by fire, maltreatment and torture.

Among all that iron and fire, the index records one more presence in the picture: angels.
