The back of this panel is painted too. Utrecht's record ends on fragments of an imitation stone finish on the reverse — a small gold-ground picture finished on both faces, because it was an object before it was an image. On the front Christ stands in the sarcophagus, knees bent, holding his own wound open and looking straight out at you. Mary is held up by John. Angels carry the nails, the sponge and the lance.
