Michael's sword is raised, and it stays raised. His foot rests on a falling chest, and the whole weight of heaven is one foot. The Web Gallery of Art's commentary reads the sword as held aloft like a sign above the figures from hell, not swung: his presence alone is enough. Below him the Kunsthistorisches Museum sees the angels who rose against God, now become devils, their distorted faces crying out in desperation, in the harsh realism of Jusepe de Ribera, the Spanish-Neapolitan court painter. The canvas stands more than four metres high. At lower right, beneath the tumbling bodies, Luca Giordano signed it: IORDANVS. F.
