A stem of white lilies crosses the air, held out by the archangel as he comes down. Our Lady looks up, one hand on her breast and the other open, a bare foot showing under the blue. The Met records that Luca Giordano, the leading painter in Naples, worked in many manners, often imitating Renaissance masters, and painted this after a trip to Venice in direct homage to Titian; its catalogue admits specialists have found it hard to place in his work since its 1959 showing there. Nearly eight feet tall, it brings Gabriel in at the height of a church wall. Her open hand is already answering.
