The Child lies on an upturned basket, two small angels kneeling at it, and a bundle of wheat lies on the floor nearby. The shepherds came looking for a manger; Adriaen Isenbrant gives them a basket. The National Gallery of Art, Washington, describes three men in burgundy and black entering the ruin from the left, one with an instrument at his lips, two more kneeling beyond Saint Joseph, and tiny figures dancing round a fire far off. Writing on the motif in general, the Met's Cloisters garden blog recalls that Gregory the Great translated Bethlehem as house of bread. The wheat lies at your feet.
