About this painting

The Louvre builds its attribution on the eyes. It finds the figures' large eyes a little out of proportion, their expressions less subtle, the drapery modelled less sculpturally, and on that evidence gives the panel to Lorenzo di Credi. Morelli and Berenson had preferred the name of Leonardo.

This is a predella panel, sixteen centimetres high, from the altarpiece commissioned around 1475 from Verrocchio for the Madonna di Piazza oratory in Pistoia Cathedral, work the museum says fell largely to Lorenzo. Look at Gabriel and at Mary: their eyes carry the argument.
