Eight angels lift Our Lady, and she lifts nothing; her hands are joined. She stands on a crescent moon, and far above her the Trinity holds out the crown. On a sheet of music to the left of her head, in tiny letters, runs Ave regina celorum, and the National Gallery of Art traces the music to Walter Frye's setting of that Marian antiphon; Frye was an English composer popular at the Burgundian court. The Master of the Saint Lucy Legend painted the instruments with care, loud trumpets and shawms beside soft vielle, lute and harp, and the angels play them as the musicians of his day did.
