About this painting
The witnesses are gone. Assumptions put the apostles at the tomb; the Web Gallery of Art calls their absence here unusual, like the Virgin's profile. In the Golden Legend they open the sepulchre and find not the body, only the vestments and the sudary, the shroud.
Poussin keeps the evidence and dismisses the men who found it. A white cloth is bunched over the near edge of the coffin; three putti drop white flowers into it. Between fluted columns she rises sideways, palms up, borne by putti. No one is left at the tomb but three putti, and you.
