About this painting

The picture of the Devil tempting Saint Augustine was taken from the Augustinians. Munich's acquisition line records it flatly: the panel arrived in 1812 as secularised property from the Augustinian canonry at Neustift near Brixen. The Devil holds out a book in which a man's sins are written. Beyond that the Alte Pinakothek publishes nothing at all — no description, no literature. What it does give is Swiss pine, 103 by 91 centimetres, and a date of about 1480.
