This is half a panel. The Belvedere is explicit: the Flagellation and a Betrothal of the Virgin were once the inside and the outside of a single double-sided altarpiece wing, more than twice this size, and at an unknown date somebody cut the wing down and separated the front from the back. The two faces now hang as two pictures. It was Pacher's last commission — a Marian altarpiece for Salzburg whose shrine alone stood almost six metres high.
