Saint John the Baptist kneels in front, twisted round, one arm flung up to point at the Christ Child, who stands at His Mother's knee in a blaze of light. Behind the Baptist, Saint Jerome lies asleep on the ground. The National Gallery reads the Virgin as the Immaculate Conception, before the moon. Vasari says imperial troops burst into Parmigianino's studio while he was at this altarpiece and, stupefied at the work, let him go on; the Gallery tells the story, then offers a drier reading, that the soldiers were simply perplexed and left him alone. Maria Bufalini commissioned it for a burial chapel in San Salvatore in Lauro, and after the Sack of Rome in 1527 it was never installed. The Baptist's arm was lit to catch a high window beside the altar, so that in the dark church it would seem to reach out, into the light.
