Eleven disciples turn toward Christ, and one does not. The National Gallery thinks Judas is probably the figure second from the left, the only disciple who does not turn toward him. At the far left a shadowy figure retreats through an open door.
Christ sits at the centre of a Roman triclinium, holding bread and cup in one hand and raising the other in blessing. The light comes from three flames: the double-wicked lamp above his head and a candle on a stool at the left. The sacrament is instituted by lamplight, with the door still open.
