Christ is giving out the bread, and the apostles come to Him on their knees. The Italian state catalogue observes that the wine is only alluded to, by the chalice resting on the table: Giandomenico Tiepolo chose the moment of distribution. The same entry watches the room rise around the meal, a dark rustic vault opening into Corinthian columns and capitals, and where his 1753 version had a sunset sky, a profusion of angels and putti arrives; one carries a thurible. The catalogue finds a cartellino on the smooth column at the left, lettered DOMENICO TIEPOLO, with a date. The bread is small, and heaven leans down to see it.
And whilst they were at supper, Jesus took bread and blessed and broke and gave to his disciples and said: Take ye and eat. This is my body.
