About this painting

Christ takes his own arms off the cross. The Prado's account is exact — he unnails both hands to hold the monk, who seems to float weightless in them with an expression of extraordinary tenderness. Light rakes in from the left so that only these two are lit and nothing else can distract you from the embrace. Antonio Ponz saw the picture in the prior's cell at the Portaceli charterhouse around 1774 and wrote that beside it everything else seems nothing.
