Christ has taken His arms from the Cross, and a monk in white leans into them. Fernando Benito Doménech, writing for the Prado, tells the episode from Ribadeneyra's Flos Sanctorum in which Christ unnailed Himself to embrace Saint Bernard, and reads it as the Christian soul's mystical surrender, given with an overwhelming calm: the monk seems to float weightless in the Saviour's powerful arms, his face happy and full of tenderness. Francisco Ribalta painted it for the charterhouse of Portaceli near Valencia. A low viewpoint makes the pair monumental, and light enters from the left in the tenebrist manner, so only the two of them are lit. The Prado traces the heroic body of Christ to Sebastiano del Piombo. The faces of two angels keep to the dark. The Cross behind them stands empty.
