A lamb stands on the rough blanket, and above it an angel plays a lute. Saint Francis sits up barefoot on his bed, hands open, eyes lifted to the music. The Prado tells the episode of a musician angel appearing in the saint's humble cell, and makes light the true protagonist: an unreal light that floods Francis and transforms his everyday room. In the doorway a Franciscan friar comes in at that moment with a minute candle, and Francisco Ribalta, the museum says, presents the apparition as an extraordinary event the friar cannot see. The scene follows a design by Piazza engraved by Sadeler in 1604; Ribalta painted it for the Capuchin convent of La Sangre de Cristo in Valencia. A plain cross hangs on the wall. The friar's candle is all the light he has.
