About this painting

Two lights are burning here and they belong to different worlds. One is a friar's small candle. The other floods Francis where an angel has appeared playing music. And the friar stepping into the cell at that moment, the Prado notes, cannot see any of it. Ribalta built the scene from a print — a composition by Paolo Piazza engraved by Sadeler in 1604 — and Charles IV liked the result enough to take it from the Capuchins and leave them a copy.
