A tiny man kneels in a scale and prays. The pan that holds him rides high, lifted by a winged figure in a gold helmet and muscled breastplate who raises a sword in the other hand; the National Gallery of Art's own description records the small man praying to Mary. Above, Our Lady sits with the Christ Child on her lap, and angels crowd behind with flowers and folded hands. A bishop reads at the right; below, two men write. The Gallery recognises these as evangelists, one probably Mark. Where Signorelli's altarpiece first stood is less certain: its notes suggest an Albergotti chapel, possibly the one in Arezzo cathedral built about 1517, but observe that the chapel's dedicatee, Saint Sylvester, is missing, and offer instead the destroyed church of San Marco a Murello. The small man in the scale needs no notes. He is still rising.
