A goldfinch sits in the Christ Child's fist, small, with a red face, and He looks straight out past it. Our Lady, veiled and wrapped in blue, looks down at Him. From His other hand a fine chain runs to the bird's foot, the end held up by His chest, as the National Gallery of Art describes it. The goldfinch, says the Smithsonian's account of Washington's two canvases, stands for His coming death. In the other version, a Kress gift of 1943, the Child holds His Mother's mantle instead; Diane De Grazia has suggested that one was painted for a client who wanted one like this, the version always accepted as Giovanni Battista Tiepolo's own. The death is a little bird with a red face. He has it on a leash.
