The doctrine went where the king put it. Charles III founded the church at Aranjuez in 1767, his reign's first important building project, and seven altarpieces were commissioned that year from an Italian; the Immaculate Conception went left of the high altar, Saint Francis right.
The mirror is the doctrine itself: the surface a stain would show on, showing none. Palm, obelisk, crescent, twelve stars: the standard set, supplied to specification by a foreigner.
His last major commission. He died in Madrid in 1770; they hung a few years before the king found them old-fashioned and had them removed.
