Partridges break out of the sky over a ring of dancing children, and the rest of the orchard holds still. Anthony van Dyck sets Our Lady under an apple tree with the Christ Child clinging at her neck, her face turned up and away; Saint Joseph rests his head on his hand behind them. A parrot sits in the branches and a sunflower leans above her. Natalia Gritsay, the Hermitage's curator of Flemish painting, reads the birds as lust, whose attribute they were, driven off by the Virgin's purity; in the same reading the apple tree makes Mary the new Eve, and the sunflower and the parrot call her undefiled. The painting is named after what is leaving it. The children keep dancing while the partridges go up.
