His right hand shows on his mother's shoulder, the arm hidden behind hers, and the Museo Poldi Pezzoli points to that hand as proof of how carefully Lippi planned the group. The museum reads the scene as the dead Christ rising from the sarcophagus, the Virgin holding his head, John supporting him at the waist, the shroud drawn over his hair.
The e-venise guide sees the face beginning to come alive while the skin keeps the grey of the shroud. Behind them a bare mountain opens in a grotto, which the museum reads as Joseph of Arimathea's rock tomb.
