About this painting

The Child's right hand rests above his knee, thumb and two fingers extended, and Andrea Golden's catalogue entry for Newfields reads that small gesture twice over: a vestige of the old Byzantine blessing, and a quiet reminder that the Child is both human and divine.

Newfields catalogues the panel as a workshop picture, one of several versions that may descend from a lost Bellini original. Golden finds the same pairing in the Virgin's clothes behind the parapet: an earthly red tunic, a celestial blue robe. What the mother wears in cloth, the Child makes with three fingers.
