The Child laughs and reaches, and Our Lady, His Mother, holds out something small between her fingers. A rainbow stands behind them; lilies grow at her knee beside a jar of roses. Matthias Grünewald painted her between 1516 and 1519, the Stuppach parish records, as the centre of the Maria-Schnee altarpiece at Aschaffenburg; the right wing showed the miracle of Our Lady of the Snows at Rome in 352, and the left wing is lost. In 1532 Cardinal Albrecht of Brandenburg gave the Madonna to the Teutonic Order. Overpainted to suit changing taste, it was called a Rubens until 1908. The Child is still reaching.
