About this painting
Look past the Virgin, through the arch, into the walled garden: one Carthusian monk is walking there, reading. That figure is the picture's address. It ties the panel to Genadedael, the charterhouse just outside the walls of Bruges, and tells you whose eyes it was painted for. Behind him stands the real skyline of the city. David lifted his Virgin and Child from Jan van Eyck, then set them in a porch with Italian capitals in the Bruges of his own day.
