The Office of the Dead fills three full quires of the Belles Heures, and this is its only picture. Its prayers were said to shorten a loved one's time in purgatory. The Limbourgs gave it an open grave holding two partly decomposed bodies. Wendy A. Stein, writing for the Met, suggests they may echo the tale of the three living and the three dead; Timothy Husband calls the page one of the most enigmatic in the manuscript. Behind the cross a man raises his hand toward a tablet with nothing on it.
