Jerome's study here is a rich church building, and the Limbourgs have put more in it than one scholar. In an upper storey, three prophets hold banderoles referring to books Jerome translated; below, he translates the Bible, a task the page's caption says took fifty-five years and six months. The Met's commentary sees the Limbourgs adding their own stamp to a traditional scene. Wendy A. Stein, writing for the Met, follows his tame lion through the cycle: three times on folio 187r, then, most traditionally, here in the study with him.
