About this painting

Anthony had no tools to dig Paul's grave, so, the legend says, lions came to help. The Met's commentary sets the pallor of Paul's corpse against Anthony's ruddy face as he lowers the body into the ground, and Wendy A. Stein asks readers to look closely at Anthony's sorrowing face and at Paul, limp and pale. The story fills a self-contained quire of eight pages, its captions drawing, it seems, on Jerome's life of Paul, the first ever written. Paul's tunic, which the caption says was made of palms, is painted in a braided basket weave.
