A thread of blood leaps from Christ's side across the gold. The Gemäldegalerie tells where it goes: blind Longinus, behind the mourners at the left, has opened the side with his lance, and drops of the holy blood heal him. John gives the spear and the blood and water; the name and the cure come from later tradition. Opposite, the museum says, the executioners quarrel over the robe they cast lots for, and the centurion points to Christ as the true Son of God. Angels with censers fly above the crossbeams. The museum likens the precision of the Bohemian or Austrian Master to miniature painting: a Calvary to hold close.
