The Met reads this small panel as made for private devotion, and it rewards being held close. Soldiers and horsemen turn in a ring around the cross, a circular composition the Museum traces to Ghiberti's bronze doors for the Florence Baptistery. Below them the Virgin has collapsed into the arms of Mary Magdalen and Mary of Cleophas, the women the Gospel places at the foot of the cross. Angels hover at the arms of the cross with their faces covered. The gold ground is worn through in places, and it is printed as it stands.
