About this painting

Two canvases of this Francis exist in Rome, and for sixty years the Capuchins' one carried the name. In 1968 a second was made known, from San Pietro at Carpineto Romano, and the Gallerie Nazionali at Palazzo Barberini, where it hangs on deposit, say restoration and technical study found the original in the Carpineto picture. Rossella Vodret reports pentimenti beneath its surface, the painter changing his mind; the Capuchin canvas has none.

The friar holds the skull and looks into it. A cross of two plain planks stands on the sawn trunk beside him; his habit is patched.
