The arm does the work. Bellori, writing in 1672, described this Jerome as one who, writing attentively, stretches out his hand and pen to the inkwell, and that reach across the table carries the picture. The Galleria Borghese reads the canvas as a dialogue of opposites: warm flesh and purple mantle against the cool open book, the skull upon it and the white cloth; life and death, past and present.
Calvesi proposed the purple as a compliment to Cardinal Scipione Borghese, the picture a gift. Marini thought it unfinished; the beard is summary, the arm repainted. Cinotti, in 1983, disagreed.
