The man on our left, back to us, pulls at the rope on Andrew's wrist. In the Golden Legend Egeas has the apostle bound so that his pain will last; he hangs two days preaching to twenty thousand, and when the crowd turns and Egeas comes to take him down, those who would unbind him find their arms of no power. Cleveland's description follows that story: hands mysteriously paralysed, the martyrdom fulfilled.
Below, a woman in a head covering and a man in glinting armour look up. Andrew's cross is usually X-shaped. This one stands upright.
