The head goes onto the dish and Salome looks away. The National Gallery calls her expression enigmatic, asking whether she turns from the head in disgust or shame, appalled at what she has brought about. Beside her the elderly maidservant clasps her hands in grief. The executioner is impassive, thrusting the head towards her.
The Gallery reads the two as linked: their heads tilt at echoing angles and one raking light crosses both faces, yet he only held the sword; the guilt is hers. Painted, the Gallery suggests, in Caravaggio's last months, it leaves the dark ground bare in places.
And he beheaded him in the prison, and brought his head in a dish: and gave to the damsel, and the damsel gave it her mother.
