About this painting

A lamb lies bound in the foreground: the shepherds' only wealth, given to the newborn, and already what he will be.

Everything else is hay and broken wood, rustic tones in a narrow range. Saturated colour appears only where Ribera wants the eye: the Virgin's lapis blue mantle. A wooden beam laid as a diagonal, and a shepherd's raised hat: both direct attention and devotion to the child. Ribera signed the rock a shepherd kneels on.

In 1802 the King of Naples gave it to France — not a gift, but compensation for nine paintings his troops took from Rome.
