Our Lady lifts the white cloth, and there is the Child, bare, on the straw. An old shepherd kneels with a basket of eggs; a young one comes in with a lamb held at his shoulder, a lamb brought to the Lamb. Saint Joseph sits close by. The Cleveland Museum of Art's note, by Charles Eppley, calls the scene the shepherds' witness account of the birth of Christ, and says Carlo Dolci dismissed many Baroque trends as superfluous, keeping an unobtrusive, placid style, a devout follower of the brotherhood of St Benedict. He was slow and meticulous, London's National Gallery adds. The basket is set down beside the manger.
