Our Lady stands on a pedestal, the Child on her arm and a book in her hand, and two small angels cling at her knees. Vasari called the creatures carved on the pedestal harpies, and the name stuck; the Uffizi's Monica Alderotti reads them as the locusts of the Apocalypse, with women's heads and bellies like iron breastplates, come up from the abyss. Saint John stands aside with his book, author of that prophecy; opposite, Saint Francis holds a cross, the saint Bonaventure identified with the angel of the sixth seal. On her reading the pedestal is the mouth of Hell. Andrea del Sarto stands her on it.
