About this painting

The creatures this painting is named after are probably not harpies at all. The Uffizi's own curator says critics now read them as the locusts of the ninth chapter of the Apocalypse — the ones with women's faces and breastplates of iron that come up out of the well of the abyss in a cloud of smoke, visible here at Mary's right. Which makes the pedestal the mouth of the pit, and the Virgin the weight holding it shut.
