About this painting

Who painted this is unsettled. Washington catalogued it as Cossa in 1941; Zeri removed it from him in 1967; Manca suggested Gherardo Costa in 1990. The Gallery now prints only Ferrarese.

The mother prays, hands together, over a Child asleep in the corner. The Met and Edinburgh, describing other pictures of this motif, read it as a foreshadowing of his death. Two small angels at lower left copy her hands. He is wrapped in sheer cloth, with a golden halo, and he wears red: a necklace at his throat, a bracelet at each wrist.
