Our Lady folds her hands above her Son, and He sleeps as if the world could wait. He is wrapped in sheer cloth, a red necklace at His throat and a red bracelet at each wrist. Two haloed figures at lower left copy her hands. The Met and Edinburgh, writing of other pictures of this motif, read such a sleeping Child as a foreshadowing of His death. Attribution is unsettled: the National Gallery of Art catalogued it as Francesco del Cossa in 1941, Zeri took it from him in 1967, and Manca tentatively proposed Gherardo Costa in 1990. The Gallery now records only Ferrarese. Her eyes rest on Him.
