About this painting

He signed it on the step of the Virgin's throne, and the date has a hole in it. The Städel prints the inscription as + PETRVS·XPI·ME·FECIT·14[.]7 — the tens digit illegible — while cataloguing the panel 1457. Jerome and Francis flank the throne. And the museum's own list of who is depicted carries two names you would not expect at a Madonna: Adam and Eve. The Fall and the remedy staged together, on a panel forty-six centimetres high.
