A red flower rests between the fingers of Our Lady, and the Christ Child, naked on her dark lap, reaches up for it. Saint Jerome stands at the left in red, holding a book; Saint Francis stands barefoot at the right by an open door, a tall crucifix at his side, one hand on his breast. The Met's essay on Petrus Christus reads this small work as a summary of his art: mastery of one-point perspective, a debt to Jan van Eyck, and the Italian format called the sacra conversazione. So the saints keep the Virgin company in one room. Christus signed the front edge of the lower step of the throne, and the Städel records the date with a hole in it, 14[.]7, one digit illegible, and catalogues it as 1457. The carpet runs down the steps toward your feet.
