The crown of thorns lies on the floor with the nails beside it, and Our Lord's body, which they held, is laid down on a white cloth. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus bear Christ; Our Lady joins her hands. The French state's inventory counts thirteen figures, among them Saint John, the holy women, the Magdalen, Saint James and a donor in a canon's habit, and it transcribes the frame: a Latin line from Isaiah across the top, one from the First Letter of Peter across the bottom. The inventory attributes the work to Jean Fouquet, about 1460-1465, and Daniel Russo names canons as its patrons. The canon kneels among them, hands joined.
