No Gospel narrates this crowning. The National Gallery of Art traces the image to Mary's bodily Assumption, recalled from the fourth century and defined as dogma by Pius XII in 1950; painting took up the Coronation only in the twelfth century.
Fra Angelico painted his for the Observant Dominican church at Fiesole, and Patricia Rubin reads the assembled court of heaven as chosen and ranked to argue that new observance's standing. The Louvre records gold lettering on those held by John the Evangelist, Dominic and Thomas Aquinas: the order's saints come to the coronation carrying their texts.
