About this painting

Orlandi read this panel as church furniture. In 1431 the Camaldolese monks of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Florence ordered a fitting choir, and the Last Judgment was set into the back of its solemn seat, as the Ministry of Culture's catalogue records his argument.

The monks' own founder is in the court of heaven: the catalogue names Saint Romuald among the saints beside Dominic, Francis, Peter and Paul.

On the ground the tombs and sarcophagi stand open for the dead to rise, and among the devils sits Lucifer.
