About this painting

It looks like a triptych, and was not made as one. In the Gemäldegalerie's catalogue Neville Rowley writes that the panel was originally continuous and was divided later; the division that matters runs down the middle, Paradise on the left and Hell on the right. So it is printed whole, as one picture. In the crowd an angel pushes a woman in red toward the damned. Rowley suggests that Pope Eugene IV and Cardinal Juan de Torquemada, the likely patron, are portrayed, and notes that Pius V had Spranger copy it in 1570.
