About this painting

Saint Michael was patron of Antwerp's fencers, one of six armed guilds, and the KMSKA records that the fencers had Frans Floris paint their altarpiece. So the swordsmen's saint raises his sword at top center.

He and his companions drive a horde of demons out of heaven, led by a seven-headed dragon. The museum sees Raphael and Michelangelo in the angels of the upper register, and Bosch in the creatures below: curved talons, clawing hands, the head of a wild boar, a grinning goat.

Floris signed and dated the panel at lower right, in the half that is falling.
