Bruegel builds the demons out of natural history. The Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium identify, among the falling rebels, one with the black and yellow patterned wings of a Machaon butterfly, a spiny fish from the Pacific and Indian oceans that fills itself with water when threatened, and an armadillo, which lives only in the Americas.
At the center, Archangel Michael, in shining gold armor, keeps a calm face. His right foot rests on the stomach of the seven-headed monster of the Apocalypse.
The rebels fall and, falling, turn into specimens.
