About this painting
Mary sits on the sickle moon with the dragon crushed beneath it, and around her some fifty angels turn in rings. Boijmans reads the vision straight out of Revelation — a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet. The outer ring plays: lutes, viols, trumpets, bagpipes. An inner ring carries the hammer, the crown of thorns, the column and the nails, so the instruments of music and the instruments of the Passion turn in the same sky. The panel is half a diptych; its crucifixion is in Edinburgh.
