The Virgin is learning to read, and her mother gives the lesson. Saint Anne and Mary bend over the open book, two putti hover overhead, and Joachim stands behind them, watching.
When Schelte à Bolswert engraved the picture, his plate printed a reading beneath it: a line from Psalm 44 telling a daughter to listen and leave her father's house. Her father is the man at the back.
Rubens painted it for the south transept altar of Antwerp's Discalced Carmelite church. His Saint Teresa of Ávila filled the north altar, same size, facing a child still at her letters.
